The European Commission chose Ukraine’s Independence Day to announce the approval of €6.1 billion in support for the country amid its ongoing armed conflict with Russia. This new funding comes on top of €16 billion already approved for defense procurement programs, all forming part of the Ukraine Support Loan — a €90 billion package earmarked for defense and the maintenance of the country’s essential public services.

Top European officials gather in Kyiv
The funds will be directed toward the anti-aircraft and missile defense systems, missiles, ammunition, and radar equipment that Ukraine urgently needs. According to reports from ERT, the Ukrainian flag is flying on European Union institution buildings, while senior European officials have traveled to Kyiv — sending a clear message that Europe stands firmly by Ukraine’s side.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized that “blue and yellow — the colors of the Ukrainian flag — have become the colors of courage, resistance, and determination.” European Council President António Costa also arrived in Kyiv early in the morning, where he will take part in ceremonies marking the 35th anniversary of Ukraine’s Independence Day, celebrated this year under the shadow of war.
