Scenes of absolute devastation greet visitors to Porto Germeno in the aftermath of the wildfire that swept through the area, leaving dozens of homes in ruins. Residents are struggling to come to terms with the destruction, having watched their properties burn to ash, with many homes sustaining total damage and deemed unsafe for habitation. The relevant inspection teams have completed their damage assessments, and from Monday, August 10, the process of submitting applications for compensation for fire victims officially begins.

Porto Germeno wildfire: Over 100 homes with total or severe damage
More than 100 homes in Porto Germeno have been completely destroyed or have sustained serious structural damage. According to inspection data, a total of 192 on-site assessments were carried out. Teams went door to door, classifying each building as safe, temporarily unusable, or dangerous.
Based on the inspections, 84 buildings were designated “red” — meaning they are dangerous and marked for demolition — while 65 were classified as “yellow,” indicating they are temporarily unfit for use.
Applications for compensation open from Monday
With the assessments now complete, the process of applying for the available financial assistance is underway. As Deputy Minister for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Kostas Katsafados, stated: “From Monday, the Municipality will have issued its announcement, so that residents can submit their applications — using their E9, E1 tax forms and a family status certificate — and receive the first payments, namely the basic needs allowance and the household contents allowance.”
From early September, residents will also be able to apply for funding to repair or reconstruct their homes.
Available aid and what is provided
For homes that have been completely destroyed, state assistance is granted without income criteria and can reach up to €1,000 per square metre for properties of up to 150 square metres.
Additional provisions include:
- Up to €600 to cover basic living needs,
- Up to €6,000 for the replacement or repair of household contents in a primary residence,
- Up to €3,000 for a secondary residence, depending on the extent of damage,
- A temporary housing allowance ranging from €300 to €500, depending on individual circumstances.
Those affected will be required to submit their inspection report, E9 tax form, and the necessary property ownership documents, so that a file can be compiled and forwarded to the ministry for the disbursement of financial assistance.
