Payments for the Transport Equivalent subsidy totaling €23.2 million have been launched, benefiting more than 281,000 island residents across Greece. The payment covers the reimbursement of part of the cost of ferry and air travel undertaken by eligible recipients from July 1 through December 31, 2025.
This payment marks the completion of the Transport Equivalent subsidy disbursement for the entirety of 2025, as part of the ongoing efforts by the political leadership of the Ministry of Shipping and Island Policy and the General Secretariat for the Aegean and Island Policy to provide meaningful support to Greece’s island communities. It is worth noting that throughout 2026, a total of more than €60 million has been distributed in support of island residents, island businesses, and fuel transportation costs.
Kikilias: Full 2025 subsidy payments now complete
“Delivering the Transport Equivalent subsidy, ensuring connectivity, keeping ticket prices down at all costs, and — above all — guaranteeing safety: these were the core, non-negotiable goals I set from the very first day I took office at the Ministry of Shipping and Island Policy,” said Vasilis Kikilias, adding: “In the midst of war and an energy crisis, we have fought — and continue to fight — hard to keep ferry ticket prices stable. We increased funding for unprofitable routes and moved forward with four-year tender processes to secure reliable ferry connections for our islands. On the safety front, inspections of vessels of all types have now surpassed 1,800.
The Transport Equivalent subsidy touches the daily lives of thousands of island residents. With today’s payment, the full 2025 disbursement is complete, and more than 281,000 island residents are receiving over €23.2 million as a partial reimbursement of their travel costs.
