A major development has emerged in the case of the illegal cigarette smuggling ring, as authorities in Dubai have reportedly arrested the individual known as “Edik”, who is alleged to be the leader of an internationally active criminal organization. Arrested alongside him was the individual known as “Leonidas”, a Greek-origin national from Uzbekistan, who is considered the organization’s second-in-command and had been wanted under an international arrest warrant. Following the arrests, Greek authorities immediately filed an official extradition request with the United Arab Emirates for the return of both suspects to Greece.
According to available information, the criminal organization is alleged to be involved in the trafficking of illegal cigarettes, with members from Ukraine, Russia, and Georgia. However, its activities are not limited to tobacco smuggling alone, as law enforcement agencies have linked the group to a series of serious criminal offenses that are currently under investigation.

Edik: The charges being examined by authorities
According to the evidence currently under review, the organization is alleged to be involved in extortion, kidnapping, explosions, arson, assault, and threats. Members are also linked to contract killings attributed to what is known as the Greek Mafia. These charges are the subject of an ongoing criminal investigation, and Greek authorities are seeking to have both arrested individuals returned to the country to face justice for the offenses attributed to them.
Reports indicate that “Edik” had recently disappeared from the known locations where he had been operating in Dubai, raising questions among law enforcement agencies. According to the same sources, the emirate is believed to have served as the operational hub from which he coordinated the organization’s activities. His arrest is considered particularly significant, as it is expected to lead to a more comprehensive mapping of the criminal network, its associates, and its methods of operation, both within Greece and abroad.
Extradition decision to Greece now awaited
Following the arrests, Greek authorities were immediately notified and activated procedures for the return of the two suspects to Greece. An official extradition request has already been submitted to UAE authorities. Attention is now focused on Dubai’s response to the Greek request. According to information available so far, there are indications that the response may be positive, which would pave the way for the transfer of both detainees to Greece, where they will face charges in connection with the investigation into the criminal organization’s activities.
