Two photographs included in the report of the Greek Police Criminal Investigation Division (CID) are believed to have been a crucial piece of evidence in the investigation to identify the individuals suspected of the arson attack on Marfin Bank. According to information, the investigation began to unravel in 2020, when the officers in charge, already in possession of material from the attack, obtained — in the context of a separate case — a large archive of photographs of individuals active in the anti-authoritarian scene. In these photographs, they identified details that matched those found in the documented footage of the Marfin perpetrators — specifically, the bags carried by the individuals pictured at the time of the attack were also spotted in photographs from the suspects’ previous vacations.
Marfin case: The bag photographs and the identification of the “tall man” and a 42-year-old suspect
The officers handling the case believe that a positive identification can be established between the individuals pictured in the Marfin arson photographs, those appearing in the vacation photos, and the two 42-year-old suspects who have been arrested and remanded in pre-trial detention. Two bags are at the center of the evidence — one black and one lighter in color. The black bag reportedly bears a band symbol painted in red, while the lighter-colored bag is reportedly identified by a distinctive rust marking on its zippers.
In the disputed photographs, Greek Police officers believe they can identify the so-called “tall man” from the Marfin photographs as one of the two 42-year-old suspects who were arrested. In both photographs, the individual is carrying one of the two bags in question.
