PASOK is facing a new period of internal tensions, as disappointing poll results have created a climate of discontent within the party. The leadership of Nikos Androulakis is being called upon to manage a situation that threatens to trigger fresh internal turbulence, at precisely the moment when the party needs cohesion and unity.
The Diamantopoulou-Doukas clash exposes the cracks
A telling example of the atmosphere that has taken hold within PASOK is the open confrontation between Anna Diamantopoulou and Haris Doukas. The clash at the top of the party serves as a mirror of the deeper problems facing the movement, with differing views on strategy and political direction fueling growing tensions.
Diamantopoulou: “A recipe for a party to throw open its doors and windows and watch voters walk out” — her sharp response to Doukas on coalition talks
It all began when Anna Diamantopoulou launched a fierce attack against Athens Mayor Haris Doukas, categorically rejecting his proposal for a pre-election alliance with Alexis Tsipras. Speaking on the Open television channel, the former European Commissioner branded the mayor’s initiative as catastrophic for PASOK, warning that such moves lead to a mass exodus of voters from the party. “Discussing this topic right now — whether we align with one side or the other — is a recipe for a party to throw open its doors and windows and hemorrhage voters. Seriously, I cannot imagine a more ridiculous approach,” Diamantopoulou said pointedly.
Diamantopoulou placed particular emphasis on the importance of centrist voters to the future of PASOK. According to her statements, the party must not allow New Democracy to attract this critical electoral segment. The party’s strategic priority, she argued, should be to strengthen its centre-left identity — without wavering or making compromises that could weaken its electoral base.
Haris Doukas fires back at Anna Diamantopoulou
Haris Doukas was quick to respond. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he accused Anna Diamantopoulou of expressing views that do not represent the PASOK electorate — specifically her praise of the New Democracy government for its fiscal achievements and the country’s improved international image. “After all that, it comes as no surprise to me that she finds calls for dialogue within the progressive space ridiculous,” the Athens Mayor wrote.
