The risk of fire remains high in our country, which is in the grip of a heatwave, with temperatures reaching up to 39 degrees Celsius today, Wednesday (16/7), in several areas of mainland Greece. The suffocating atmosphere, particularly in large urban centers, combined with increased humidity, creates difficult conditions, especially for vulnerable population groups.

Temperatures in Athens and Thessaloniki will reach up to 37 degrees Celsius, while in Thessaly and Peloponnese maximum values may touch 39 degrees. Winds remain weak, a fact that intensifies the risk of fires, which is characterized as very high for many areas.

Detailed forecast: Heat, dust and local phenomena in the north

According to meteo.gr, generally clear weather is expected today, with sunshine and locally patchy clouds from midday, mainly in mountainous mainland areas. There is a small chance of brief showers in the mountains of Eastern Macedonia and western Thrace. African dust concentrations will be slightly increased.

The National Meteorological Service predicts generally clear weather, with transient clouds at midday and afternoon in mainland areas, mainly in the north, where local showers cannot be ruled out in mountainous regions. Winds will blow northerly 3-5 Beaufort, locally in the Aegean up to 6 Beaufort. Temperature will show a slight drop in the north, but will remain at high levels in most areas.

Temperature: From 18 to 35-36 degrees Celsius. In western Macedonia the maximum 2 to 4 degrees lower.

IONIAN ISLANDS, EPIRUS, WESTERN CENTRAL GREECE, WESTERN PELOPONNESE

Weather: Generally clear. During midday-afternoon hours local clouds will develop and local showers will occur in the mountains of Epirus.

Winds: Northerly directions 3 to 4 and in the Ionian locally 5 Beaufort.

Temperature: From 19 to 36-37 and locally 38 degrees and in the Ionian islands up to 34 degrees Celsius. In interior Epirus 2 to 4 degrees lower.

EASTERN CENTRAL GREECE, EVIA, EASTERN PELOPONNESE

Weather: Generally clear. During midday-afternoon hours local clouds will develop in mountainous areas.

Winds: From northerly directions 3 to 5 and in eastern parts up to 6 Beaufort.

Temperature: From 22 to 36-37 and locally 38 degrees Celsius.

CYCLADES, CRETE

Weather: Clear.

Winds: North-northwest 4 to 6 Beaufort.

Temperature: From 23 to 32-33 degrees and in southern Crete locally up to 35 degrees Celsius.

EASTERN AEGEAN ISLANDS – DODECANESE

Weather: Clear.

Winds: From northerly directions 3 to 4 and in the north 5, locally 6 Beaufort.

Temperature: From 24 to 34-35 degrees Celsius.

THESSALY

Weather: Generally clear. During midday-afternoon hours local clouds will develop and local showers may occur in mountainous areas.

Winds: Variable 3 to 4 Beaufort. On coasts and Sporades north-northwest 4 to 5 with rapid weakening.

Temperature: From 19 to 36-37 degrees and in Sporades up to 30-31 degrees Celsius.

ATTICA

Weather: Generally clear.

Winds: From northerly directions 4 to 5 and in eastern areas locally 6 Beaufort.

Temperature: From 23 to 36-37 degrees Celsius. In eastern areas the maximum 2 to 3 degrees lower.

THESSALONIKI

Weather: Generally clear with few transient clouds during midday-afternoon hours mainly in surrounding mountains.

Winds: Northwest 3 to 4 Beaufort with gradual weakening from late morning hours.

Temperature: From 23 to 35 degrees Celsius.

Forecasts for Thursday and Friday

Thursday 17/7:

Weather will remain clear, with local clouds in mainland areas during midday-afternoon hours, while there is a possibility of isolated showers in northern mountains. Winds variable 3-4 Beaufort, locally in the south westerly up to 5 Beaufort. Temperatures will remain at high levels.

Friday 18/7:

Change of scenery in northern Greece, with clouds that will gradually increase and be accompanied by local rains and sporadic thunderstorms. In the rest of the country generally clear weather with local clouds is expected. Temperature will show a drop in the north.

Regions at fire risk due to heatwave

Very high fire risk exists today in many regions, according to the Fire Risk Prediction Map of the General Secretariat of Civil Protection. In risk category 4 are:

  • Attica

  • Evia region

  • Corinthia

  • Argolida

  • Lesbos, Chios and Psara


Competent state and local authorities have been placed on heightened alert, while Civil Protection appeals to citizens to avoid activities in the countryside that could cause fires through negligence, such as burning dry grass, using tools that produce sparks, outdoor barbecues and others.
