“It’s poverty, it’s money in the middle, they had cut their benefits,” says the grandfather of the three children who were removed from their home in Agioi Anargyroi, with both parents arrested on charges of raising them in unsanitary conditions.
Agioi Anargyroi: “They need help, not prison”
“As a grandfather, I used to come and see the house. He fixed it twice because the children are a bit destructive and eat whatever they find from the fridge, ice cream and such, and go with their hands on the wall. He had fixed it two or three times, the man did. The children were very clean, with their clothing, they weren’t abused children,” he maintains.
He notes that he had made some comments about cleanliness in the house, but repeats that they cared for and did not neglect the children. “Should he feed his children or pay electricity bills? When you earn a thousand euros, after fifteen days you have no more money, it’s finished. They need help, not prison,” he says in closing.
Parents arrested – Children taken to “Agia Sophia” Children’s Hospital
It should be recalled that after police intervention, the three siblings were removed from this environment and transferred to “Agia Sophia” Children’s Hospital for examinations and preventive care.
At the same time, neighbors and relatives of the couple speak of a situation of extreme poverty that had trapped the family in a dead end. As they describe, they live on the father’s salary alone, while recently a benefit they received was cut.
The incident comes to light just 24 hours after a similar case in Peristeri, where six children were living under deplorable conditions, with filth on an apartment building roof.
