From today until Friday, the Supreme Judicial Council of the Supreme Court is convening to decide on promotions, transfers, and appointments of judicial and prosecutorial officials. This time, however, the Council’s sessions have gained greater interest as they will also determine whether to renew the terms of the three delegated European prosecutors: Dionysis Mouzakis, Popi Papandreou, and Chariklia Thanou.
This specific issue is expected to occupy the Council today, though it remains unknown whether the decision of the supreme judges and prosecutors will be announced within the day. This is a matter that has created tensions between the European Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Supreme Court, and the Council’s decision is expected to either bridge this gap or widen it. This is because since November 2025, the College of European Prosecutors decided to renew their terms, along with colleagues from other European countries, something that Greek judicial authorities interpreted as interference in internal procedures.
In any case, the Greek side emphasizes that, according to the Constitution, the Supreme Judicial Council is responsible for deciding on all promotions, transfers, and appointments of judicial and prosecutorial officials. At the same time, the head of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office, Laura Kövesi, during her last presence on Greek soil at the Delphi Economic Forum, left open the possibility that in case the prosecutors’ terms are not renewed, the matter could even reach the European Court of Justice. The Supreme Judicial Council can decide either to renew the terms of the three prosecutorial officials or to fill the positions with the other six prosecutors who have submitted applications. In any case, there is also the third scenario of renewing their terms for a limited period to complete the investigations they are handling.
The only certainty is that in the next 24 hours we will know exactly what will happen with the three Greek European delegated prosecutors, and whether their terms in the European Public Prosecutor’s Office will be renewed or not.
