How the workplace accident in Volos occurred with a 58-year-old victim
The workplace accident occurred at 4 PM on Holy Monday. The 58-year-old, who works for a contractor, had gone with a crew to the Nea Dimitriada area for foundation construction work. The accident happened shortly after work ended, when the 58-year-old attempted to load the mini excavator onto a truck to transport the equipment back to base.
A metal ramp was set up at the site for the mini excavator to climb onto the truck bed. During this attempt, the machine overturned, crushing the 58-year-old operator.
The worker’s colleagues immediately called emergency services, whose ambulance rushed to the area, picked up the injured man, and urgently transported him to the hospital. Hospital doctors intubated the 58-year-old in the ICU, with his condition considered extremely critical due to severe head injuries.
58-year-old freed using crane
According to the same reports, the mini excavator lacks a protective cab that could have shielded the operator. The operator was exposed on the machine, so when it overturned, he fell head-first onto the pavement and was crushed by the equipment.
Freeing the 58-year-old trapped under the machine required crane assistance.
Unconfirmed reports suggest the ramp rails were not properly connected. As a result, the bolt came loose, the rail shifted, the ramp opened, and the mini excavator overturned.
