The final farewell to the great lady of Greek music, Marinella, will be said today, Tuesday (31/3), by relatives, friends and ordinary people, with the funeral service taking place at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens. The news of Marinella’s death spread deep emotion throughout the country, as she was a voice that marked decades and connected like few others with the collective memory of Greeks.
Marinella: Today the final farewell, her body lies in state for public viewing
Her family announced on the evening of Saturday, March 28, that the great performer had “passed away” at her home at 6:00 PM, following the major health ordeal that followed the stroke she suffered in September 2024 on stage at the Herodion Theatre.
According to the family’s announcement, the funeral will take place at 2:00 PM, while earlier the body of the great performer will lie in state for public viewing at the chapel of the Holy Church of Saint Eleftherios from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
Two unique eulogies for the beloved singer
Despite the fact that Marinella herself did not want funeral speeches, as Mary Avgerinopoulou revealed on the “Morning” show, two great artists will speak about her. Haris Alexiou and Giorgos Dalaras will be the only people to deliver eulogies, honoring her life and career.
“Haris Alexiou was, for Marinella, the most important Greek female singer. She herself didn’t want eulogies, but Charoula did. Giorgos Dalaras rarely speaks publicly. It will be these two, because they don’t want to tire people either, they want everything to be in perfect harmony,” stated Mary Avgerinopoulou, describing the singer’s special choice and respect for her final moment.
Private burial, the family’s wish
The burial, as announced, will take place in a close family circle, away from the spotlight of publicity, while instead of wreaths, the family’s wish is for donations to be made to “Floga,” an association of parents of children with cancer.
