Not even through casting could the composition of the case file formed by the Financial Crime Investigation Unit for the new case of massive tax evasion, shell companies, fake invoices and fraudulent hirings, as well as non-payment of contributions, have emerged. With money as the common denominator, a roster of ephemeral celebrities is revealed through the case file of the major economic fraud being investigated by the so-called “Greek FBI”. Here we apparently have a multi-layered network of shell companies and fake invoices that extracted several million euros and caused equivalent damage to the Greek State.
The numbers alone capture the magnitude: 22 arrests, more than 40 people in the case file, damage allegedly reaching 20 million euros to the social security fund and tax evasion estimated at around 11 million. Behind the numbers, however, are entirely recognizable faces. And this is perhaps the most striking element of the case. In the “puzzle” of those involved, accountants, businesspeople and so-called “straw men” coexist – individuals who allegedly offer a “front” and expertise, covering the real structure of the organization while simultaneously operating the gears of the “scheme”.
Among them appear people with public profiles, recognizable figures with backgrounds in showbiz, television and social media. Among those arrested stands out a particularly active TikToker, with participation in the reality show Survivor and strong presence on social media platforms, with catchphrases that have become part of Gen Z slang. At the same time, however, he appears to be active in business in the restaurant sector, operating cafes. Another persona is expected to be brought to judicial authorities in handcuffs, who became known through his participation in MasterChef. He also works professionally as a photographer and previously had activity in the restaurant business. In the same context, a businessman in the spa and massage services sector was also arrested, who also promotes his activities on social networks in a distinctive and viral way.
The picture, however, is not completed only with those who were arrested. The case file also includes people with even greater recognition, who – at least so far – are not wearing… bracelets. These are two well-known figures who move in the modeling sphere and have also worked as TV presenters: one became widely known through his participation in Nomads, and the other is also a model and television personality, with appearances on shows and the reality show Survival Secret. The first has become the talk of the town following a high-profile divorce and a new romance. According to information, authorities did not proceed with their arrest because by the time they attempted to locate them, the companies connected to their names had already ceased operations.
The “thread” of the case goes quite far back, at least to 2018. A chronological point from which, according to investigation data, an organized system of creating shell companies and issuing fake invoices was allegedly established, with the ultimate goal of defrauding the insurance provider. A system that, as everything indicates, was not based only on “invisible” mechanisms, but also on individuals – some with executive roles, others as “fronts,” and others with public profiles that give the case a completely different dimension. Authorities’ investigations are in full progress, with the coming period expected to be crucial for fully mapping the structure and activities of the network.
