Three police officers are in the dock at the Athens Mixed Jury Court, accused in the case of a 19-year-old woman who alleges she was the victim of gang rape inside the Omonia Police Station in October 2022. Two of the defendants face rape charges, while the third is accused of complicity. All three deny the acts attributed to them.
The 19-year-old’s rape allegation at Omonia police station
According to her testimony, on the evening of October 11, 2022, the 19-year-old approached police officers around 10 PM, seeking help for a problem that had arisen at the restaurant where she worked. About an hour later, according to her testimony, the officers suggested she go to the police station under the pretext that they would help her with the issue she was facing. However, once there, as she claimed, they led her to an isolated area where their attitude suddenly changed and, according to her description, the two officers proceeded to rape her without her consent.
“I froze with fear”
The 19-year-old said she found herself in a state of shock and could not react. “I froze with fear and couldn’t do anything,” she said characteristically, adding that the presence of a service weapon next to her intensified the feeling of threat and her inability to resist.
Allegation of recording with body camera by one officer
Of particular gravity is her claim that one of the defendants allegedly wore a body camera on his uniform and recorded the incident during the act.
The role of the third officer
As she testified, a third officer also entered the area, who did not react when she asked for help and did not intervene to stop what was happening.
After the incident, the 19-year-old went to another police station to report what had happened. As she claimed, a comment she allegedly heard about a “clique” reinforced her sense that her case would not be treated with due seriousness.
The trial of the three police officers for the 19-year-old’s rape case at the Athens Mixed Jury Court continues today, Monday (23/3) with new testimonies and questions that will determine the course of the case.
