Political confrontation intensifies over Chios tragedy with 15 deaths
Allegations that the Coast Guard vessel passed over the inflatable boat triggered intense political confrontation. Meanwhile, questions remain unanswered, such as why the coast guard vessel’s cameras were turned off. The Prime Minister pledged full transparency: “If there is any audiovisual material, the investigation will be conducted with complete transparency.”
The political tension surrounding the issue was evident in the discussion at MEGA News studio and on Takis Chatzi’s “Talk” show. Meanwhile, the Deputy Minister of Maritime Affairs, speaking to MEGA, rejected the version that the Coast Guard vessel passed over the migrants, while regarding the cameras, he repeated the official Coast Guard position that the vessel had already been detected by land-based cameras.
Maria Karystianou also made her reappearance, calling for law enforcement regarding illegal invasions: “Deep pain for the people who were lost, but also criticism for a state that does not have what it should and does not do what it can to prevent illegal invasions and the degradation of human dignity.”
The Coast Guard has ordered an internal investigation into the circumstances of the accident.
