An incredible case from Russia has sparked intense reactions and is making rounds on the internet: the pilot who managed to save 167 people in 2023 by performing an emergency landing is now being ordered by the courts to pay compensation for the damage suffered by the aircraft.

The incident occurred in September 2023, when Captain Sergey Belov was forced to land a Ural Airlines Airbus in a rural area following a serious failure in the hydraulic system.
The aircraft failed to reach an alternate airport, however all 167 passengers and crew members survived without any casualties.

Russia: From heroes to facing a $1.3 million lawsuit
Initially, both pilots were treated as heroes for their composure and professionalism. Shortly after, however, they were quietly dismissed, with Belov at the center of the case and facing a lawsuit worth $1.3 million.
His defense argues that the damage assessment was conducted with serious procedural omissions and that the financial calculations are not supported by the necessary official documents.
