After the calm came the political storm, and the seemingly tranquil waters were disturbed by attempts to display power and impose fait accompli. This image could encompass the situation developing between Ukraine and Russia. The outcome of the crucial tête-à-tête in Florida between the leaders of the US and Ukraine, Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelenskyy, did provide temporary relief to the global community, calming the intense feelings and frustrations of previous months. However, the unpredictable and fragile character that governs peace efforts to end the war in Ukraine appeared stronger than the will to implement a widely accepted peace plan. Just as analyses were focusing on the security guarantees to be given to Ukraine, the eastern territories, and the agreements reached after the joint press conference between Trump and Zelenskyy, the reversal came with the announcement from the Russian Foreign Ministry about a drone attack, orchestrated by Kyiv, on Putin’s presidential residence in the Novgorod region. Automatically, the progress steps that had been written about in previous hours seemed to be lost amid war declarations, mutual accusations, and significant announcements.

The critical question at this given moment, which seems to concern a large part of the international community, is whether the situation is in danger of escalating and simultaneously beginning a new round of war. The Ukrainian side, moreover, conveys that the Kremlin is “building on” the attack “pointing to” Ukraine to have the ability to unleash large-scale offensive action against Kyiv and surrounding areas, thus further weakening the war-torn country.
War in Ukraine: Kyiv’s reaction to Moscow’s accusations and Trump’s statements
From the first moment, just minutes after the attack announcement, which allegedly occurred on Sunday, Zelenskyy spoke of lies. Moscow, for its part, timed the attack on the day when private contacts were conducted between the US and Ukrainian presidents, saying that Trump was immediately informed about the offensive action and moreover – according to Russian reports – appeared shocked. Subsequently, Donald Trump stated that he learned about Russia’s accusation that Ukraine attempted to attack Vladimir Putin’s residence in the Novgorod region with 91 drones. “Putin told me he was attacked at his home,” Trump said, according to Reuters. “I was very angry,” he added. At the same time, the American president spoke about the communication he had earlier with his Russian counterpart, characterizing it as a “very good discussion.” “We have some very thorny issues,” Trump noted regarding talks to end the war in Ukraine.
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister urged, however, world leaders to condemn Russia’s “manipulations“ regarding the alleged Ukrainian attack on Vladimir Putin’s residence, saying that Moscow is seeking to find “false justifications“ to carry out further attacks on its neighbor. “Typical Russian tactics: accuse the other side of something you do or plan“ Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stated via a post on platform X. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the Russian accusations are “false“ and that he discussed the issue with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
It is recalled that the Ukrainian president argued that with such claims, Russia is trying to undermine the progress that, as he said, has been made in peace talks between Ukraine and the United States.
Zelenskyy’s full statement:
“Russia is at it again, using dangerous statements to undermine all achievements of our shared diplomatic efforts with President Trump’s team. We keep working together to bring peace closer.
This alleged “residence strike“ story is a complete fabrication intended to justify additional attacks against Ukraine, including Kyiv, as well as Russia’s own refusal to take the necessary steps to end the war. Typical Russian lies. Moreover, the Russians have already targeted Kyiv in the past, including the Cabinet of Ministers building.
Ukraine does not take actions that can undermine diplomacy. On the contrary, Russia always takes such actions. This is one of many differences between us.
It is vital that the world not remain silent now. We cannot allow Russia to undermine efforts to achieve lasting peace.”

Zelenskyy’s warning and Russian threats
Zelenskyy simultaneously called on Trump to respond accordingly to Russian threats.
Kremlin foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov said, for his part, that Putin and Trump spoke by phone and the Russian president was briefed in detail by his Republican counterpart and his senior advisers about negotiations with Ukraine. Trump was “shocked“ when Putin told him about the attack on the presidential residence, he added. Russia intends to continue cooperating with the US to achieve peace, but will reconsider its position, Ushakov emphasized.

It is worth noting that Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated earlier that Russia’s negotiating position will be revised to take into account “the final transition of the Kyiv regime to a policy of state terrorism.” The Russian Foreign Minister explained that targets have been set, but insisted that Moscow does not intend to withdraw from the negotiating process of the peace plan. Lavrov also confirmed that no information has been received about casualties or damage and explained that 91 drones were destroyed.
