Storm Byron is approaching, with many schools in Rhodes, Santorini, Symi and other areas expected to remain closed tomorrow (05/12).
Specifically, by decision of Rhodes Mayor Alexandros Koliades, the operation of all school units, at all educational levels, as well as sports facilities, will be suspended tomorrow, Friday December 5, 2025, in all Municipal Units, due to the severe weather phenomena expected in the area, according to the Emergency Bulletin for Dangerous Weather Phenomena from the National Meteorological Service. The suspension also applies to Preschool Education units, all Special Schools and Children’s Creative Activity Centers, the Municipal Conservatory and all workshops operating under the responsibility of the Municipality of Rhodes. The services of the Municipality of Rhodes and the Independent Civil Protection Office are on heightened alert to address any problems that may arise from the severe weather. Citizens are advised to avoid unnecessary travel and follow Civil Protection guidelines.
Given the forecast for strong winds, heavy rainfall and traffic hazards, the Municipality of Thira decided to suspend the operation of schools at all levels. Specifically, by mayoral decision, all school units in the Municipality will remain closed on Friday December 5 “due to severe weather phenomena, as a preventive measure to protect the safety of students, escorts and teachers.”
Storm “BYRON”: Schools closed in Tilos too
Schools in Tilos are also expected to remain closed on Friday December 5 due to extreme weather conditions. The Municipality of Tilos informs parents, guardians and students that, with Mayor’s Decision No. 422/2025 (Protocol No. 7139/04-12-2025), all primary and secondary education school units on the island will remain closed on Friday December 5, 2025, due to the expected particularly dangerous weather phenomena. The decision was made in accordance with:
• legislation regarding municipal responsibilities in cases of extreme weather conditions
• the emergency bulletin for dangerous weather phenomena from the General Secretariat of Civil Protection
• medium-term forecasts for severe phenomena in the area
Schools closed in Symi too
Due to the imminent severe weather phenomena expected in the Dodecanese, the Municipality of Symi is proceeding with preventive closure of all schools on Friday December 5 to protect students and staff from potentially dangerous conditions. Specifically, by mayoral decision, it was decided to suspend the operation of all Primary and Secondary Education school units in the municipality of Symi, for Friday December 5, due to dangerous weather phenomena.
Schools closed in Kastellorizo – What the Mayor said
Schools in Kastellorizo will remain closed due to the imminent weather phenomena expected to affect the island in the coming hours. Specifically, due to the extreme weather conditions, on Friday December 5, Primary and Secondary Education schools in Kastellorizo will remain preventively closed, for the safety of students and teachers. The Mayor of Kastellorizo, Mr. Nikos Asvestis, also appeals to all citizens and fishermen to limit their movements as much as possible, due to the extreme weather conditions, for their own safety.
